Collaborative 4: Collaborate and Reflect

Overview of Collaborative 4:

This collaborative event provided an opportunity for teachers to engage in constructive collaborative practice with a view to deepening their own professional learning and enhancing student learning. Participants also had the opportunity to share learner experiences that support the development of the Senior Cycle key competencies.

Webinar 4: From Global Agreements to Irish Action: SDGs and Climate Policy

Overview of Webinar 4:

The resources from Webinar 4 focus on the Sustainable Development Goals and Climate Policy.  Through insights shared by our guest speaker, participants explored the origins and intentions of the SDGs and looked to 2020 and beyond. The webinar provided an opportunity for participants to plan and share learner experiences that support students to meaningfully engage with LO 3.3 of the Climate Action and Sustainable Development specification.

PLE 7 & 8: Think Forward, Learn Forward

Overview of PLE 7:

As part of this Professional Learning Experience, participants engaged with multiple learning outcomes from the specification. The resources from PLE 7 supported teachers in engaging with planetary boundaries and doughnut economics. Teachers then examined how values underpin attitudes and dispositions towards climate action and sustainable development. Building on these insights, teachers collaboratively planned for, engaged in and reflected on meaningful dialogue in the climate action and sustainable development classroom.   

Overview of PLE 8:

PLE 8 began with engaging in future-thinking methodologies focused on the Anthropocene. They then had the opportunity to investigate secondary data demonstrating humans’ role in global warming. Finally, participants used effective questioning to support students in the skill of reflection, which is interwoven throughout the climate action and sustainable development curriculum specification.

Collaborative 3: Evaluating the implementation of national policy decisions in Ireland that have an impact on the environment

Overview of Collaborative 3:

As part of Collaborative 3, participants engaged collaboratively with learning outcome 2.7. The resources provided, supported teachers in the ‘evaluation of the implementation of a national policy decision in Ireland that has an impact on the environment’. Building on this work, teachers shared approaches to evaluating sources that they use with their students in the CASD classroom.

Webinar 3: Biodiversity ‘Think-in’

Overview of Webinar 3:

The resources from Webinar 3 focus on biodiversity loss in Ireland. Through insights shared by our guest speaker, participants explored the key drivers, impacts, and current challenges facing Ireland’s biodiversity. The webinar provided an opportunity for participants to deepen their understanding of biodiversity within the context of Climate Action and Sustainable Development and to engage in informed discussion around protection, restoration, and sustainable practices.

PLE 5 & 6: Teaching for a Changing World: Learning About and Through Action​

Overview of PLE 5:

As part of this Professional Learning Experience, participants engaged with multiple learning outcomes from the specification. The resources from PLE 5 supported teachers in engaging with climate justice movements and evaluating how media worldviews influence the communication of climate justice issues. Building on these insights, teachers collaboratively planned for teaching, learning, and assessment using a non-linear, integrated approach that reflects the nature of the Climate Action and Sustainable Development subject.

Overview of PLE 6:

PLE 6 built participants’ confidence in engaging with Applied Learning Task 3 through immersion in a nature-based participatory experience. Furthermore, the participants had an opportunity to examine the Guidelines for the Leaving Certificate Climate Action and Sustainable Development Action Project in tandem with the sample brief, enabling them to engage confidently and effectively with the Additional Assessment Component (AAC).

Collaborative 2: Examining key concepts and terminology of Climate Action and Sustainable Development

Overview of Collaborative 2:

Collaborative 2 offered participants the opportunity to build professional connections with other teachers of Climate Action and Sustainable Development and enable professional discussions around effective approaches to implementing the Climate Action and Sustainable Development specification into their classrooms.

The resources from Collaborative 2 support a collaborative exploration of some of the key concepts and terminology of Climate Action and Sustainable Development. Supportive posters, a collaborative Padlet and KWL Worksheet facilitate an exploration of each concept and term examined.

This webinar was designed in collaboration with the State Examinations Commission, the NCCA and the Department of Education to support teachers in engaging with the sample examination papers for the new Climate Action and Sustainable Development Specification.

PLE 3 & 4: Hope, Togetherness, Community

Overview of PLE 3:

The resources from Professional Learning Experience 3 explore strategies to support the affective dimension of teaching and learning in Climate Action and Sustainable Development. An exploration of the non-linear integrated approach of learning across the strands is undertaken through the lens of how social position and power effects capacity for action. Professional Learning Experience 3 also offered and opportunity for participants to begin collaboratively planning Units of Learning using the non-linear integrated approach of learning across the strands.

Overview of PLE 4:

The resources from Professional Learning Experience 4 explore a non-linear integrated approach to working with Learning Outcomes in Climate Action and Sustainable Development through the lens of Just Transitions. The non-linear integrated approach across the strands is further examined through the collaborative design of Units of Learning. Professional Learning Experience 4 also provided an opportunity for participants to collaboratively plan for the first term of the learning journey for students in Climate Action and Sustainable Development.

PLE 1 & 2: Introducing Climate Action and Sustainable Development

Overview of PLE 1:

The resources from Professional Learning Experience 1 introduce the Climate Action and Sustainable Development Specification, support an exploration of the non-linear integrated approach of learning across the strands and examine how the Applied Learning Tasks can enable students to collaboratively engage with core concepts in Climate Action and Sustainable Development in authentic situations.

Overview of PLE 2:

The resources from Professional Learning Experience 2 explore a non-linear integrated approach to working with Learning Outcomes in Climate Action and Sustainable Development. The non-linear integrated approach across the strands is further examined through the collaborative design of learner experiences that support all learners in the Climate Action and Sustainable Development Classroom. The additional assessment component of the Action project is also introduced as part of PLE 2.
